Dry eyes

The dry eye syndrome is a condition more common than we think. The main pathogenetic mechanisms due either to impaired tear production or a loss due to evaporation.The first category belongs Sjorgen syndrome and other common acquired conditions insufficient tear production. The second category consists meibomian gland disease, use of lenses, etc.

What are the symptoms of the condition?

  •  foreign body sensation
  •  intense itching
  •  burn

In some cases, the cornea may show punctate epithiliopatheia, ie small changes like spot abrasions. In more severe situations that are not addressed, we can and loss of the eye, if there is infection (keratitis) or melting of the cornea than no tears.

What is the appropriate treatment?

Tear substitutes: especially artificial tears eye drops to form the basis of this treatment. They can be used several times a day.

Invasive Method: Carry artificial occlusion of the bypass route of tears and the eye remains liquid for longer periods.

Other methods: The patient should avoid hot rooms with central heating. May use special air humidifiers and wearing goggles on days with a lot of air. Sometimes the use of eye ointment at bedtime is beneficial.
